Why Antarctica is at the Tippy-Top of my Bucket List

March 11, 2016

A few weeks ago, I posted a link asking you all to vote for me to win a cruise to Antarctica with Oceanic Expeditions. After posting, somebody asked me “do you really want to go to Antarctica?”

The question kind of threw me off. I guess it didn’t occur to me that perhaps not everyone wants to see this incredible place for themselves.

As some of you may know, my ultimate goal in life is to visit all seven continents. Sounds easy. It’s only seven.

But then you remember that one of the seven is Antarctica.

Sounds crazy right? Why would anyone want to visit a frozen, barren, land of nothingness?

Well first, your opinion of Antarctica is all wrong.

Second, let me explain:

why

Not many people go there

I have a draw to travel to places that people don’t typically go. Paris? Cancun? No thanks. Uzbekistan? Colombia? Sure!

It’s friggin beautiful

I mean, have you even seen the pictures on a sunny day?? The water. The glaciers. The BLUENESS

Somehow people actually survive there year round

Yep. It’s true. There are people who live in Antarctica. Isn’t that fascinating? Wouldn’t you want to see that with your own eyes??

I love the story of Ernest Shackleton and his crew

Crazy impactful. This guy was a real boss. Not familiar with the story? Read about it here.

I’m intrigued by Antarctic Tourism Impacts

As much as I want everyone to have the opportunity to see and visit Antarctica, it scares me that increased tourism could lead to serious deterioration of this land. I’d love to learn more about sustainable tourism practices that are implemented in Antarctica.

This weird thing I used to say

“That’s cooler than eating a popsicle in Antarctica!” I kind of want to do that. Just to make the comparison legit.

So basically what I’m saying is that Antarctica is an amazing place that I absolutely HAVE to see for myself. I knew I really didn’t have a chance of winning the contest. After all, the person in the lead had over 7000 votes. I was truly astounded by the number of votes I did get and by the number of people who shared and asked their own friends to vote for me. So to those who took the time to vote and share with others, thank you. Thank you for believing in me and wanting to see my dreams come true.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen this round. But some day it will.

…And maybe I’ll bring you back a penguin 🙂

It is on my bucket list too! I usually opt for warm, beachy weather but who could pass this up?

I am totally with you! I would give an arm to go to Alaska. But then I am all about cultures and adventure. I guess some people prefer a really hot beach.

Alaska is also quite amazing. I visited on a cruise when I was in elementary school. I don’t remember a ton, but I do remember holding a crab and that the scenery was beautiful. I hope you’re able to get there some day!
