BaseCamp Bonn: The Coolest Place to Stay in Bonn, Germany

June 29, 2017

The city of Bonn is a great alternative to traveling through the main big cities in Germany. While there are plenty of big-name hotel chains to choose from, Bonn offers a unique alternative to your average starched-white sheets and boxy roomed accommodations. Enter: the creative and exciting little haven that is BaseCamp Bonn.

This place is unlike any place you’ve stayed before. It’s seriously so cool. As you cross the threshold of the unassuming warehouse-turned hostel, you are immediately transported into a world of quirky details and color that leaves you wanting nothing more than to stay indoors and wander.

Inside, you’ll find a variety of unique places to lay your head for the night. A refurbished train car offers dorm-like bunks and a highly affordable opportunity to enjoy the BaseCamp Bonn atmosphere. If you want something on the extreme edge of unique, Volkswagen vans, a Trabant with a rooftop tent, and even a retired mountainside gondola provide sleeping space.

But perhaps the most enticing and eye-catching accommodations are the dozens of refurbished camping trailers that fill the space within the warehouse.

There are plenty of big-name hotel chains to choose from, but Bonn offers a unique alternative: the creative and exciting little haven of BaseBamp Bonn.

Each one of these accommodation options sports a different, well-designed theme, making BaseCamp Bonn the type of hostel you want to stay inside all day. With all the colors and fun details, I can think of no better way to get to know BaseCamp Bonn than this:

Super Fun Game Time!

Yes, yes, dear readers. BaseCamp Bonn is so cool, and I have so many photos, that I’ve decided to turn this post into a super fun game. The idea: I will number the photos in this post, and you will guess the theme of the camper that corresponds with each number. Leave your guesses in the comments below, and the first person to get ALL seven correct will win a super fun prize! Make sure to leave your name and a working email address when commenting, so I can get ahold of the winner!

Ready? Set. GO!

#1) We must start off with the camper I called home! Can you guess its theme?

Back to business: Here’s what makes staying at BaseCamp Bonn so much more awesome than your traditional hotel or hostel room.

A Destination Within a Destination

While the city of Bonn may be your destination, BaseCamp Bonn is basically a whole other destination, within that destination. It’s like destination-ception over here. Between all the different campers to observe, and both the indoor and outdoor community spaces, it seems like there’s no reason to leave the BaseCamp Bonn property. Everything you need is right there!

#2) Can you guess this camper’s theme?

Something Different Every Time

There are so many different options for places to sleep, you’ll want to return to BaseCamp Bonn over and over again. BaseCamp Bonn is also constantly acquiring new vehicles and creative spaces to convert into lodging, so every time you visit offers a little something new to enjoy. It’s like BaseCamp Bonn will never get old and boring. Can you say the same for other accommodations?

#3) This one’s an easy one 🙂

A Gateway Drug to Backpacking

If you’re not much of a camper at present, BaseCamp Bonn may just influence you to try something new. Set up much like an indoor campground, BaseCamp is a great introduction to the world of outdoor camping and backpacking.

#4) What is this camper’s theme?

Creativity Translates into Community

All the detail and color throughout the space of BaseCamp Bonn tends to draw a rather creative crowd. As people connect through this shared creativity, a community is born. The plentiful common spaces throughout the property allow people to express their creativity and collaborate together in this funky environment. Perfect strangers can come together here to engage in writing, photography, music, and more.

#5) Look closely to find this camper’s theme

#6) This camper is full of detail! What’s its theme?

An Introvert’s Best of Both Worlds

As opposed to a traditional hostel with shared dorms and constant being around people, BaseCamp Bonn is the best of both worlds for introverts. They can make use of all the common space to meet people and enjoy the community aspect of a traditional hostel. But at the end of the day, when it’s time they begin to crave their alone time, introverts can retreat to their campers and rejuvenate their energy levels.

#7) The camper on the left has a fun theme! Can you name it?

Wow! This is seriously the coolest idea ever! The decor is absolutely amazing. If we weren’t already in a van this would be such an awesome stopover for us.

I remember reading on your blog a post on another super cool place to stay in Germany (maybe Berlin?) so you have a good eye for finding quirky accommodation! I think I would pick the F1 van, I like to be that close to the kicker 🙂

That’s great – I’ve never seen anywhere like it. They’ve got the British one down perfectly. I think I’d pick the 60s one though – love it!

Such a cool place! I love the idea and the themes. I’m horrible at guessing games, but the 3rd one reminded me of the Scooby Doo show for some reason.

Bonn is indeed a great alternative to some of the larger cities of Germany. The creative of the Base Camp is a cool sign of this little city infusing some fun into it. Nice write up on this quirky accommodation option.

How creative! I would so love to explore and stay in each of the lovely campers vans. I m totally blown away by the amount of work that has gone into converting the vans into such pretty accommodating rooms, How I wish I were there to experience them. Kudos to the person who conceptualized this idea. A very unique and interesting concept indeed 🙂

This is seriously the coolest accommodations I have ever seen. Pinned so I can absolutely find this later when I’m back in Germany! I have a slight obsession with the whole tiny house movement and warehouse-turned into living places so Basecamp checks off everything. What part of Germany is Bonn located?

This is so unusual! I loved Germany before I read this, but now I love it even more! I love how each camper has a theme… I think my favourite would be the ‘surfing’ style one.

What a hidden treasure! It’s possible to have an amazing experience even if you don’t have a camper. I liked the #1, the Woodstock!
