The Cool Globes of Battery Park

August 8, 2016

New York City is a place highly known for its art. From classic art museums, to theater and Broadway, to the ever-growing street art scene, New York City is the place for art lovers. As a traveler, globes are probably one of my favorite artistic images. Therefore, I was so excited to stumble upon this art installation in Battery Park during a recent trip to New York City.

Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Global Planet is an art exhibit designed to raise awareness for climate change. There are several different locations that feature these creative globes like Chicago, San Francisco,  and even internationally like Copenhagen, Jerusalem, and Amsterdam!

The Cool Globes of Battery Park, Manhattan.

Cool Globes 1

Green Your Laundry – This globe is covered with articles of clothing, clothespins, and bits of rope. It serves to remind us of the more earth-friendly ways we can do our laundry. Many modern washing machines use lots of water to do one load of laundry. Using eco-friendly washers or even doing laundry by hand can help with water conservation on our Earth.

Cool Globes 2

Green Your Home – Laundry isn’t the only place we can change our behaviors for the betterment of our environment. This globe is covered with pictures of different things we can do which affect the Earth. We can recycle, donate our unwanted clothes, turn the lights off, and make use of greenhouses to grow more plants!

Cool Globes 3

Responsible Manufacturing – This globe is a reminder to our large corporations to manufacture their goods in an environmentally responsible way. By eliminating waste, implementing energy efficient machinery and practices, corporations can help diminish their environmental footprint on the Earth.

Cool Globes 4

Adjust The Thermostat – Adorned in a blue knitted sweater, this globe reminds us that running the heating and cooling systems in our homes contributes to energy waste. By simply putting a sweater on, we can adjust the thermostat and won’t need to use as much energy heating our homes.

Cool Globes 5

Unplugged – The happy children on this globe reminds us of the importance of putting down our electronic devices and getting outdoors. It is so important that people, and especially children, get a chance to enjoy the nature the Earth has given us. Go kayaking, biking, or play a new sport!

Cool Globes 6

Service Your Car – See all those spark plugs on this globe? They remind us that it’s important to keep our vehicles in good condition. A well-maintained car is much more fuel efficient than those that are not maintained. Keeping your cars running smoothly can help reduce the impact on the environment.

Cool Globes 7

Get Involved – Uncle Sam wants YOU to get involved in protecting the environment! Without our contributions to protecting the environment, the Earth with only continue to get more polluted and worn down. It’s up to each person to do what they can to ensure the beauty of the Earth is around for years and years to come.

Cool Globes 8

Post-Consumer Waste-less – This globe emphasizes the importance of using post-consumer goods. For example, upcycling old materials and using them for something new. This artist used 100 pounds of discarded mail in this piece, saving all that paper from landfills!

Cool Globes 9

Urban Growing – This beautifully painted globe is adorned with images of nature to promote urban greening in our cities. Designating areas of nature within our cities not only encourages people to get outside, but the plants and trees also help to absorb harmful greenhouse gases.

Cool Globes 11

Unity Is Strength – This globe is covered with the national flags of each country on our Earth. The artist wanted to remind us of the importance of each country joining together to help fight climate change. Pollution and energy waste occurs all over the globe, and each citizen of the world must help to protect our environment.

Cool Globes 10

Tidal Energy – This globe educates us that the waves of the ocean can be used as a renewable source of energy. The power of the ocean can be converted into electricity for people all over the world to use. The red things in the water are the converters which have the potential to displace over 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere!
