20 Free things to Do in Washington D.C.

One of the reasons I love Washington DC so much is that it’s actually a super cheap place to visit. My friends and I spent one whole day in DC and only spent money on corn dogs and delicious New York-style pizza. There is just so much to do in DC and you can do it all without spending a dime! Here is a list of free things to do in Washington DC that will excite both you and your wallet.

 

1) Tour the Monuments & Memorials

You could easily spend a whole day just viewing all the different monuments and memorials in Washington DC. Luckily, they are all free to view! I recommend visiting them at night too!

2) The National Zoo

Known for its Giant Panda conservation and breeding program

 

3) The Bureau of Engraving & Printing

Offers free tours on a first come, first serve basis

 

4) National Air & Space Museum

If you love all things flight and space, this museum is for you!

 

5) The Museum of Natural History

See the famous Hope Diamond, among other engaging exhibits

6) Arlington National Cemetary

Pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

 

7) The White House

You can sign up for a free tour through your States’ Members of Congress. Must have reservations at least three weeks in advance.

8) Cherry Blossom Festival

See Washington DC coated in a blanket of pink blossoms

 

9) Walking Tours

Check out DC by Foot for some free walking tours. (Though tipping is highly encouraged)

 

10) The National Archives

11) Smithsonian American Art Museum

The nation’s first collection of American art

 

12) The Library of Congress

So much more than just a library. You have to see this place.

See the actual flag that inspired the US National Anthem

Bring the kids for a free program on Saturday mornings

 

15) The National Postal Museum

See America’s postal stamps throughout history

 

16) The Holocaust Museum

Incredibly impactful. Just go

Make sure to book tours in advance!

Watch a free performance every evening at 6:00PM

Love DC it such a great city. With lots of great restaurants! The subway system is also clean and effective. What really make it great is that so many of the attractions are free. Its a great city to do on a budget it you can get a hotel deal.
