Hostel Takeover: Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft

September 21, 2017

The city of Cologne, Germany is a popular place to visit. Between the awe-inspiring cathedral, the love locks across the Hohenzollern Bridge, and the plentiful dining and shopping, there is a lot that brings visitors to this place. When looking for a place to stay that’s within your minimal budget, yet is easy to reach and provides crazy comfortable spaces, look no further than Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft.

The Good

→ This is such a fun place to stay, because every room has a different theme. I stayed in the circus room, but other themes included ballerinas, fishing, outerspace, and Hawaii.

→ Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft has a pretty good location. It is located just outside of the city center, but is only a few minutes’ walk to the closest tram line, which will take you right into the heart of Cologne.

→ Sometimes when you stay in hostels, it can seem like the only place to be is in your room. At Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft, there are many different common spaces away from the rooms. There is a dining area, a cafe and bar, as well as an onsite theater and a whole space dedicated to creativity and creation.

The Bad

→ For such a large facility offering many beds to travelers, there are not many toilet facilities available. While the ones they do have are very nice and clean, I found that finding an available toilet in the morning hours was not the easiest task.

→ Breakfast is provided to guests for a price of €5,50 per person. I know breakfast isn’t a huge ordeal in Europe, but I still found the price to be a bit steep for the small amount that was provided. It’s easy enough to just pop into one of Cologne’s many bakeries and have a pastry for €1-3.

When looking for a place to stay that's within your budget, yet is easy to reach and provides comfortable spaces, check out Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft.

The Best Part

→ Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft had the absolute best beds of my entire Europe trip! They were spacious, comfortable beds with pillows that actually had filling to them. I honestly couldn’t wait to just sleep. The beds are also made into little pods, with curtains in the front which makes you feel like you’re not sleeping in a dorm style room at all. Each bed-pod also has a shelf, electrical outlet and personal reading lamp.

When looking for a place to stay that's within your budget, yet is easy to reach and provides comfortable spaces, check out Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft.

Overall Thoughts on Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft

Staying with Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft was very enjoyable. I loved getting to see all the different rooms and see the creativity that went into designing this hostel. The sleeping spaces were so outrageously comfortable, I could have almost stayed in the bed whole day. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Cologne, definitely check out Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft.

Oh wow – I LOVE the style of this hostel! It’s so nice to see a hostel that has made a really effort with the interior – love the quirky wallpaper. Would love to stay somewhere like this, great post.

This sounds like a great place! I love how hostels are becoming more hip and modern and are going with the development of modern-day travellers. I do agree though, that price for the breakfast certainly is steep! I stayed in a great hostel in Lisbon where the breakfast was free and it was a feast.

Thanks for outlining the good and the bad. I was skeptical about staying in a hostel, but now I’m glad I did. The hostel where you stayed looks great!

I’m not usually a fan of hostels – but this does indeed look more like a little hotel with the themed rooms!
Good that you balanced out the good vs bad, and yes, I agree re: ‘continental’ breakfast in hostels!

This is such an attractive hostel! I’ve always been a little put off by the dorm-style sleeping arrangements in hostels, but the bed-pods are adorable, and I would be much more comfortable with them. But you’re right, I think I’d head off for that morning pastry instead of the breakfast. 😀

That looks like a fun hostel! Love the colors from outside and the beds looks super comfy! I’ve been in Cologne before but I really would love to go back there one day as it was long time ago. I would definitely consider this hostel to stay at! Thanks for sharing!

I’m always a fan of a great hostel and this one looks excellent! Those pillows do indeed look like the best ones I have ever seen in a hostel (and I have stayed in a lot!) I love the idea of the themed rooms as well, what a fun idea 🙂

The style of this hostel is so cute! I love the little pods! I haven’t been to Cologne, so this might be a place I will keep on my list to stay!
