Hiking to Los Chorros de la Calera is a must-do activity if you find yourself in Juayua, El Salvador. I knew I wanted to do the hike, but couldn’t find much information on it while I was researching this part of my trip. After doing the hike myself, I realized there are several things you should know in order to have a successful and satisfying hike.
Here is everything you should know before hiking Los Chorros de la Calera.
Go With A Guide
Right on the wall in our hostel was a sign that read “There have been 3 armed robberies at Los Chorros de la Calera in the past month. Please go with a guide.” We didn’t need much convincing after that. It was easy enough just to book a tour with our hostel- and it was only $2.50 per person. Well worth it to not get robbed.
Our guides each brought humongous machetes
Wear Good Shoes
This is not a paved path you’ll be taking. It will be rocky and muddy. You’ll want sturdy shoes that offer good traction and protection for your toes.
This is an easy portion of the trail
Wear Your Swimsuit
There aren’t any places to change around Los Chorros de la Calera, so you’ll need to wear your swimsuit. And trust me, you’ll want to. This water is crystal clear and absolutely beautiful.
Lookit that water!
Bring A Towel
You’ll want to bring a towel on your hike. After getting out of the water, there aren’t a ton of sunny spots to dry yourself out- and nobody wants to make an uphill hike home while sopping wet.
The Water Is Cold…
Okay, yes. The water is pretty cold. But living in Michigan, I didn’t find the water to be much colder than what I’m used to. You just gotta get in all the way and your body will adjust. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on this cool opportunity.
Pick Up Your Trash
Unfortunately, there was a bit of garbage around Los Chorros de la Calera. We were told by our guide that it is becoming a problem. When you visit, please make sure to take care of your trash- and maybe even help clean up!
Chomoco watches for litterers….

This is very useful! Will definitely come back to it if I’m ever visiting the area!
How gorgeous – the water is beautiful, but I’ll avoid it if it’s chilly 🙂 And wow, machetes! Amazing. Thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed yourself and stayed safe.
Looks like a great hike, and that water does look very tempting. Perfect to cool down after a long walk! Were the machetes the guides bought to hack a path through the forest or to scare off the armed robbers?
I really didn’t ask, but I assumed they were for the robbers… :/
It looks like a great hike. El Salvador is the one country in central america I haven’t done yet, so I will be back one day. I love hiking so will keep this one in mind for then 🙂
I definitely recommend some El Sal travels!!
The trail which involves swimming ! It is a dream trail 🙂 And I like the dog, was he swimming as well? 🙂
Haha! No, he did not jump in for a swim.
He forgot his swimming suit? 😀
Haha!! I guess so!
El Salvador would be a neat place to visit but I am a bit leary of the danger. The water is gorgeous!! Such amazing colors. I would be glad to know how cold it was prior to leaping in!
Looks like this would be a beautiful hike. Not so sure about jumping onto the cold water but the rest of it looks like a must do if visit El Salvador. What a good dog, go get those pesty litterer’s! 🙂
Wow, glad you went with a guide! This hike looks great, thanks for he info and photos! Will have to remember this for a trip to El Salvador!
Wow the falls looks like Asik-Asik Falls in Cotabato, Philippines. That’s a cheap guide and they even brought a machete each. That’s good you enjoyed your adventure in Los Chorros de la Calera.
It seems like a great hike, Brianna. This place looks amazing, especially the water.
The water is absolutely gorgeous! I couldn’t believe how clear and clean it was!
